Authors of the MSCEIT
John D. Mayer
John (Jack) pioneered research in emotional intelligence. Since
the late 1970's, he has studied the interaction of emotion and thought. Between
1990 and 1993, Dr. Mayer coauthored the first scientific articles on emotional
intelligence, with his colleague, Dr. Peter Salovey of Yale University. Since
then, Dr. Mayer has further examined how to measure and use emotional
intelligence. At the same time, he has developed a conceptual model for the
more general study of human personality. He has published over 70 scientific
articles, book chapters, and tests.
Dr. Mayer is presently a Professor of Psychology at the University of New
Hampshire. He has served on the editorial boards of Psychological Bulletin
and the Journal of Personality, and has been a National Institute of Mental
Health Postdoctoral Scholar at Stanford University. Dr. Mayer received his
Ph.D. and M.A. in psychology at Case Western Reserve University, and his B.A.
from the from the University of Michigan, where he double-majored in Creative
Writing and Literature, and in Dramatic Theory and Criticism. Dr. Mayer's
current work on emotional intelligence has been featured in TIME, McCalls, the
Los Angeles Times, and the New York Times, and on many television and radio
programs. He has spoken on the topic in academic, business, and government
forums, both nationally and internationally.
Peter Salovey
Peter is the Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Yale
University. He is also Chris Argyris
Professor of Psychology and Professor Epidemiology & Public Health at Yale
University, where he received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 1986.Peter
completed his undergraduate work in psychology and a masters degree in sociology
at Stanford University in 1980.
Professor Salovey is a leading authority on the psychological consequences of
mood and emotion, and he has applied his work to fostering health, especially
those healthy behaviors relevant to the prevention of cancer and HIV/AIDS.
Professor Salovey has been interviewed a number of times by the New York
Times, Time, and other newspapers and magazines, and he has made frequent
appearances on television and radio. He is invited to speak on mood, health
behavior, and emotional intelligence around the world. He has written or edited
eight books and has authored more than 175 scientific publications. Professor
Salovey is a founding editor of the Review of General Psychology and an
associate editor of the new APA journal, Emotion. He is a Justice of the Peace
and a licensed psychologist in the State of Connecticut. In his leisure time, he
plays stand-up bass with the Professors of Bluegrass.
David R. Caruso
David is the founder of EI Skills Group. In addition, he is a Research Affiliate in the Department
of Psychology at Yale University. He works with executives and leaders from
major corporations in the areas of assessment and executive development.
He is the co-author of the MEIS and MSCEIT, ability tests of emotional
intelligence with colleagues John Mayer and Peter Salovey. His research focuses
on measuring emotional intelligence and applications of emotional intelligence
to the workplace. He also has an interest in the emotional intelligence of
adolescents.
He has held positions in market research, strategic planning, and product
management. He has led numerous product development teams, conducted sales
training seminars, developed and implemented marketing plans and introduced new
products in the United States and Europe. As a product manager, he was
responsible for launching a new line of software products with first-year
revenue of $11 mm.
He has a Ph.D. in psychology from Case Western Reserve University and was a
post-doctoral fellow in developmental psychology at the Department of Psychology
at Yale University. He divides his time between executive assessment, executive
coaching, organization development, training, research and writing.
The Author Team
Jack and
Peter met each other in 1985 and began to collaborate and to share ideas on
cognition and affect. Jack and David met in graduate school in 1979. Peter and
David met in 1983 when Peter was a graduate student and David was a post-doc.
The three of us started to work together professionally in 1995.
